Choosing shirts for a summer 5K sounds simple until sweat, printing, budget, and participant expectations all enter the picture.
Cotton is affordable, comfortable, and easy to screen-print. Performance polyester handles sweat much better, but it costs more and requires extra care during printing. Tri-blends land somewhere in the middle, combining a softer everyday feel with some of the benefits of synthetic fibers.
There is no single best fabric for every race.
For a competitive July 5K, runners may appreciate a lightweight performance shirt they can train in again. For a charity run with walkers, families, and casual participants, a soft cotton or tri-blend shirt may get far more use after race day.
The right choice depends on what matters most: sweat management, print quality, budget, or repeat wear.

Its surface accepts screen-printing ink well, making it easier to produce sharp lines, solid colors, and bright logos. Printers can use familiar ink and curing processes without many of the complications associated with polyester.
That makes cotton especially attractive for shirts with sponsor logos, detailed race graphics, multiple ink colors, or large front and back prints.
Cotton is also familiar. Most participants already know how a cotton T-shirt feels, and a soft ringspun cotton blank can feel considerably more premium than the heavy promotional tees that were once common at races.
The drawback appears when the runner starts sweating.
Cotton absorbs moisture rather than moving it away from the body efficiently. During a hot, humid 5K, the shirt can become heavier and remain wet after the finish. Someone racing hard may find that uncomfortable compared with a lightweight synthetic shirt.
Still, fabric type should not be treated as a performance shortcut. A randomized study involving well-trained runners exercising in 95°F conditions compared cotton with sweat-wicking and other sportswear. Researchers found no significant differences in running performance or physiological heat strain between the tested garments, although athletes identified more areas of inadequate cooling with cotton.
In other words, performance fabric can feel better when someone is sweating heavily without necessarily making that person run faster.
Cotton works best for:
Community 5Ks, charity walks, school runs, family events, first-time races, and organizers working with limited merchandise budgets.
It is also a strong option when the shirt is primarily a souvenir rather than something participants are expected to race in.
Performance Polyester: Best for Sweat Management
For hot-weather running, polyester has the clearest functional advantage.
Performance shirts are designed to move moisture away from the skin and spread it across a larger surface area, where it can evaporate more efficiently. Polyester also absorbs much less moisture than cotton, which helps the garment remain lighter as a runner sweats.
That difference becomes noticeable during hard efforts and humid summer races.
Performance polyester is particularly appropriate when the participant base includes experienced runners who already train in technical apparel. These runners may judge a race shirt by whether they would wear it on their next training run.
Current custom-apparel guidance generally places 100% polyester at the top for moisture management, while cotton performs poorest and blends occupy the middle ground.
The tradeoff is cost and decoration complexity.
Why Screen Printing Polyester Requires More Care
Screen printers cannot always treat a polyester race shirt like a cotton tee.
The main concern is dye migration.
Polyester is colored using dyes that can become mobile again when exposed to high temperatures. During curing, those dyes can migrate into the screen-printing ink.
A white logo printed on a red polyester shirt, for example, may initially look bright white and later develop a pink or discolored appearance.
Screen-printing suppliers note that many polyester dyes are set in temperature ranges around 270°F to 300°F. Heating the garment back into that range can increase the chance that dye enters the ink layer.
Experienced decorators manage the problem with techniques such as low-cure inks and dye-blocking underbases. Industry decoration specifications for polyester blends likewise recommend low-cure polyester inks and note that gray or black bleed blockers may sometimes be necessary.
That does not mean polyester cannot produce a great screen print. It simply means the printer should know the exact garment before choosing the ink system.
Race organizers should send the printer the manufacturer and style number before approving artwork, particularly when ordering dark or brightly dyed performance shirts.
Tri-Blend: The Middle Ground
A typical tri-blend combines polyester, cotton, and rayon.
The result is usually lighter, softer, and more flexible than a standard cotton T-shirt, with a relaxed drape that feels closer to retail apparel than traditional event merchandise.
Tri-blends also handle moisture better than 100% cotton, although they generally do not dry as quickly as a true performance polyester shirt.
Where tri-blends stand out is repeat wear.
Participants may not choose one for their hardest summer speed workout, but they are more likely to wear a soft tri-blend to the gym, grocery store, brewery, weekend event, or casual run.
That matters for sponsors.
A shirt worn 30 times after a race provides much more brand exposure than a technical shirt that sits in a drawer after one morning.
Current custom-apparel recommendations describe tri-blends as a useful middle ground when organizers want some performance characteristics without sacrificing the soft feel that encourages everyday use.
There is still some polyester in the fabric, however, so decorators need to consider dye migration and curing temperatures. Manufacturers specifically warn that tri-blends can require additional care when heat is applied during decoration.
Tri-blends can also naturally produce a softer, slightly vintage-looking print. For the right race branding, that can be an advantage rather than a flaw.
Which Shirt Will Participants Actually Wear Again?
The answer depends heavily on the race audience.
Serious runners: Performance polyester has the strongest case. These participants already train in moisture-wicking clothing and may reuse a well-made race shirt for workouts.
Mixed running and walking crowds: Tri-blends often have the broadest appeal. They are soft enough for casual use but athletic enough for light exercise.
Families, charity participants, and casual runners: Cotton remains a practical choice. Even if participants do not run in the shirt again, a comfortable cotton tee can become weekend, yardwork, or loungewear.
There is another factor that can outweigh fabric entirely: design quality.
A soft shirt with an oversized sponsor wall on the back may still stay in the drawer. A clean, attractive race design with a good color combination can turn an inexpensive shirt into something people keep for years.
Fabric gets the shirt through race day. Design helps determine whether anyone wears it afterward.
What Should a Summer 5K Choose?
For most race organizers, the decision can be narrowed down quickly.
Choose cotton when budget and screen-print quality are the priorities. It is particularly well suited to community events and casual races where many participants will walk or jog rather than race hard.
Choose a tri-blend when repeat wear and perceived quality matter most. It is often the strongest all-around option for mixed crowds when the budget can support the higher blank cost.
Choose performance polyester when the event attracts competitive runners, takes place in significant summer heat, or wants the shirt to function as legitimate training apparel.
Whichever fabric you select, involve the screen printer before placing the garment order. Cotton, tri-blends, and polyester may require different inks, curing temperatures, underbases, and production methods.
The best summer 5K shirt is not simply the one that handles sweat best or costs the least. It is the shirt that fits the race, prints cleanly, stays within budget, and gives participants a reason to pull it out of the closet again.
