Best Shirt Colors for Outdoor Crews Working in Extreme Heat

The best shirt color for extreme heat is not always the safest color for the job.

For landscapers, construction crews, road workers, maintenance teams, and other employees who spend hours in direct sun, white and other light colors generally keep garment surfaces cooler. But when workers operate around vehicles, equipment, or traffic, visibility can matter more than achieving the lowest possible shirt temperature.

That creates a practical tradeoff. White and light gray are strong choices for managing solar heat, while fluorescent yellow-green and orange-red provide the visibility many jobsites require. Dark colors such as black, navy, and dark green may look professional and hide dirt well, but they can become considerably hotter in direct sunlight.

Choosing the right work shirt color requires balancing all three factors: heat, visibility, and logo readability.

Why Shirt Color Matters in Extreme Heat

Sunlight carries energy. When sunlight strikes a shirt, some of that energy is reflected, some can pass through the fabric, and some is absorbed.

Absorbed solar energy becomes heat.

That is why a black shirt sitting in direct sunlight usually feels hotter to the touch than a white shirt made from the same material. Light colors reflect more incoming radiation, while darker colors tend to absorb more of it.

A 2024 study published in the International Journal of Biometeorology compared polo shirts made from the same material and design in nine different colors. During calm, sunny conditions, researchers found a surface-temperature difference of more than 15°C, or about 27°F, between white shirts and the hottest dark green or black shirts.

The researchers measured solar-energy absorption of approximately 63% for white, 70% for yellow, 75% for gray, 78% for red, and 86% for black. Dark green reached about 87%.

For an employee spending an entire summer afternoon in an open field or on a construction site, that difference is worth considering.

Which Shirt Colors Stay Coolest?

In the Japanese outdoor testing, the general pattern from coolest to hottest was:

White → yellow → gray → red → purple/blue → green → dark green/black

The exact temperature of any shirt will change with weather conditions, fabric construction, wind, moisture, and solar intensity. The larger lesson is simpler: lighter and more reflective colors usually develop lower surface temperatures than dark colors when exposed to strong sunlight.

For crews without special high-visibility requirements, white is usually the strongest choice for minimizing solar heat gain. Light gray is another practical option, especially when companies want a uniform that does not show stains as quickly as white.

Yellow can also perform well thermally, although standard yellow and fluorescent safety yellow-green should not automatically be treated as identical materials. Fluorescent fabrics have different pigments and performance requirements.

Black, navy, and dark green sit at the other end of the spectrum. They may work well indoors, in cooler climates, or for crews working mostly in shade. For employees spending hours in direct summer sun, however, they are generally less desirable from a heat-management standpoint.

Shirt Color Is Only One Part of Heat Comfort

A cooler shirt surface does not automatically mean a worker’s core body temperature will drop by the same amount.

Color is only one part of how clothing handles heat.

Fabric weight, moisture management, air permeability, fit, ventilation, humidity, wind, and the amount of skin covered can all affect how comfortable clothing feels. In the 2024 clothing-color study, researchers found that the temperature difference between white and black material was nearly eliminated when wind speed reached roughly 3 meters per second.

A famous study of Bedouin clothing reached a similar conclusion from another direction. Researchers studying loose desert robes found that black garments absorbed more solar energy, but the extra heat did not necessarily reach the wearer’s skin. The loose construction allowed heat to dissipate before it was transferred to the body.

That does not make color irrelevant. It means companies should avoid treating a white shirt as a complete heat-safety solution.

A lightweight, breathable, loose-fitting dark shirt could sometimes be more comfortable than a thick, restrictive white shirt. For extreme-heat uniforms, color should be considered alongside fabric, fit, ventilation, moisture management, work-rest practices, shade, and hydration.

Visibility Can Be More Important Than Maximum Cooling

Construction and field crews often face another concern: being seen.

Employees working around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, traffic, or complex jobsite backgrounds may require high-visibility safety apparel rather than ordinary light-colored shirts.

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 establishes requirements for high-visibility safety apparel, including background material, retroreflective material, garment design, and performance classifications. The standard recognizes three fluorescent background colors: fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red.

That means a plain white shirt may offer excellent solar performance but still be inappropriate for a worker who needs compliant high-visibility apparel.

The best fluorescent color also depends on the environment. ANSI-related guidance recommends selecting a color that creates strong contrast with the worker’s surroundings. A crew surrounded by vegetation may benefit from a different color than workers surrounded by concrete, equipment, signs, and traffic-control devices.

For landscapers and forestry crews working against green backgrounds, fluorescent orange-red can provide useful visual contrast. Fluorescent yellow-green remains extremely conspicuous in many urban and roadway environments.

At night, fluorescent color alone is not enough. Retroreflective material becomes particularly important because it returns light from sources such as vehicle headlights toward the driver.

Choose the Shirt First, Then Design the Logo

Companies sometimes choose a garment color based on how well it matches their brand. For outdoor crews, the order should be reversed.

First choose the shirt based on heat exposure and safety requirements. Then adjust the logo colors to create strong contrast.

Dark navy or black logos are easy to read on white, light gray, yellow, and fluorescent yellow-green shirts. White or very light logos generally stand out better against orange, navy, black, and other dark backgrounds.

Avoid low-contrast combinations such as a black logo printed on a black shirt or a light gray logo placed on white. They make company identification harder from a distance.

A black-on-black uniform creates a particularly poor combination for sunny outdoor work: the shirt absorbs substantial solar energy while the logo provides little visual contrast.

On ANSI/ISEA 107 garments, decoration also needs more care. Logos should not interfere with required retroreflective components or reduce the required amount and configuration of compliant background material. ANSI/ISEA 107 sets minimum material and design requirements based on garment Type and Performance Class.

The Best Color Depends on the Crew

For crews working in extreme heat without high-visibility requirements, white and light gray are usually the strongest starting points. They reduce solar absorption while providing an easy background for dark company logos.

For crews working around traffic, vehicles, or equipment, fluorescent yellow-green or fluorescent orange-red may be the better choice even though they are not necessarily the coolest possible colors. Visibility and applicable safety requirements should take priority over small improvements in garment temperature.

Dark navy, dark green, and black are generally better reserved for shaded work, indoor crews, cooler seasons, or uniform applications where solar exposure is limited.

The most effective outdoor work shirt does not rely on color alone. Pair the right color with lightweight fabric, good airflow, moisture management, an appropriate fit, and the visibility features required for the job.

In extreme heat, every factor matters. Shirt color is simply one of the easiest factors to control.
